As YonderWest clients start flying again, it’s gotten me thinking about the freedom that business jets afford - and destinations that are re-opening. While 2020 may seem like a lost year, some beautiful new FBOs have been built – alongside some timeless classics.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Jet Aviation - KSDL Scottsdale, Arizona
The clear standout in SDLs crowded FBO scene is Jet Aviation’s fantastic facility that was completed in 2020. Managed by industry veteran Timothy Vallowe, this oasis in the Sonoran Desert is the perfect launching pad for golfers (the Scottsdale area is home to over 200 courses) - and architecture buffs (Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West is only 7.4 miles away).
With US Customs availability and a 30,000 square foot hangar, Jet Aviation is the obvious choice in the greater Phoenix metroplex.
Hillsboro Aviation -KHIO Portland, Oregon
Adventure abounds in the Pacific Northwest! The Portland area’s hidden gem, Hillsboro Aviation, is well known for its special purpose Helicopter and fixed wing flight operations. Sweetening the pot is a stunning concrete and glass lobby and a 32,000 square foot hangar and MRO that’s strategically secluded from prying eyes.
The Hillsboro Aviation Experience brings out the racer in all of us- with a utilitarian pedigree, executive touchpoints, and a 1938 Indian Four in the lobby (plus a 1956 Jaguar XK140 in the hangar).
Million Air – KHPN, White Plains, New York
Million Air’s NYC flagship FBO is a winner in customer service and architecture – this property could be plunked down in Telluride or Park City and no one would be the wiser. Big (and I mean BIG) fireplaces, a full golf simulator, a 6,865 square foot indoor valet parking facility, complimentary Starbucks bar- this FBO has it all.
Not to be outdone in operational capacity, this facility boasts a 22,000 square foot executive terminal and over 50,000 square feet of hangar space. Million Air CEO Roger Woolsey said at their 2019 opening, “Our job is to be the first and last impression for the Westchester community” – consider that mission accomplished.
Fontainebleau Aviation – KOPF, Miami/Opa Locka Executive, Florida
No list would be complete without the undisputed King of South Florida FBOs. Fontainebleau commands a massive real estate footprint of over 235,000 Square feet of hangar parking, leasable office space, onsite maintenance and detail – not to mention one of my favorite amenities- a 150' x 75' sun canopy for aircraft up to Global Express. Couple that with award winning service and CAA fuel pricing, it’s a sure thing.
The ladies and gentleman at Fontainebleau- led by Bobby Courtney- are perfectly suited to handle your G650 or BBJ - and in classic Miami flash, drip you in Gucci handbags and a GoRentals Ferrari California. For all you motorsports fans, be sure to check out the nearby Concours Club, opening in mid 2021.
Sheltair – KBJC Rocky Mountain Metropolitan – Denver, Colorado
The most accessible FBO at one of the most picturesque airports in Denver, Sheltair is perfectly suited inside and out. While their ribbon cutting might have been muted due to events in 2020, GM Craig Foster and CSM Ashley Rainer have put together a feat of beauty and grace with panoramic views of Colorado’s Front Range.
Snowing? Get some jet cover under a 162 foot canopy. Snowing A LOT? Multiple hangar facilities. Need to avoid the Aspen fuel prices? They can verify your CAA membership in seconds. Picking up that new PC-24? Pilatus is right around the corner! It’s an easy decision to make.
Business Jet Center – KDAL Dallas Love Field, Texas
Perhaps everything IS bigger in Texas… enter the Grande Dame of Dallas Love Field. This BJC might not have mountain views, but CXO Cat Wren and the folks at Business Jet Center make up for it with their friendly hospitality AND year-round complimentary ice cream.
Perfectly executed customer service, CAA fuel pricing, an aircraft awning with Skydeck and 251,000 square feet of Hangar space make for a great experience for visitors and corporate jets coming into this Lone Star state business hub.
Bottom line- Keep following the magenta line!
